  12. WHAT IS A FLASH ROM:
  13. -------------------
  14.  
  15. The SupraFAXModem 288 and 288i modems contain 
  16. flash ROMs (as opposed to EPROM chips).  Flash 
  17. ROMs are "cutting edge" technology because they 
  18. allow the modem to be updated with new features 
  19. and improvements by simply running a software
  20. utility program (usually called a "flasher").  
  21.

  24. WHERE TO GET THE LATEST FLASH UTILITY:
  25. -------------------------------------
  26.  
  27. Supra currently provides flasher utilities for 
  28. DOS, Windows, and Macintosh.  The utilities are 
  29. available on:
  30.  
  31.         Supra BBS (503/967-2444)
  32.         Supra FTP Site <ftp.supra.com>
  33.         Supra Forum on CompuServe (GO SUPRA).
  34.  
  35. ***   Supra does NOT suggest getting FLASH    ***
  36. ***   utilities from other sources as there   ***
  37. ***   is no sure way to be sure the code      ***
  38. ***   they contain has not been altered,      ***
  39. ***   corrupted, or otherwise damaged.        ***

  43. RUNNING THE FLASHER:
  44. -------------------
  45.  
  46. ***   Do NOT try to use this FLASHER on     ***
  47. ***   the SupraFAXModem 288PB (PowerBook)   ***
  48.  
  49. - Only the SupraFAXModem 288 and 288i can be
  50.    updated with the flasher utilities.
  51.  
  52. - Only use the type of FLASHER designed for your
  53.   model of SupraFAXModem 288.
  54.  
  55.   - If you have a V34 the FLASH version
  56.     will include "V34" as will the ROM
  57.     code (the code return by ATi3).
  58.  
  59.   - If you have a VFC the FLASH version
  60.     will include "VFC" as will the ROM
  61.     code (the code return by ATi3).
  62.  
  63. ***   NEVER try to flash a VFC modem with    ***
  64. ***   the V34 flasher or flash a V34 modem   ***
  65. ***   with the VFC flasher, as the modem     ***
  66. ***   will not function correctly and will   ***
  67. ***   need to be sent in for repair to get   ***
  68. ***   normal operation to resume.            ***

  72. PC CLONE users need the current FLASH Downloader.
  73. ------------------------------------------------
  74.  
  75. - Be sure the modem is connected to the
  76.   computer and turned on.  Run the FLASH
  77.   utility and select the correct COM port.
  78.   (The Interupt the PORT is using does not
  79.   matter to the FLASH utility.)  The flasher
  80.   will attempt to access the modem and show
  81.   the current firmware revision in the modem.

  83. - When the flash process is in progress, the
  84.   modem display will go blank and the RD
  85.   light will flicker rapidly while the modem
  86.   downloads the new flash code.  The entire
  87.   process usually takes about 2 minutes, but
  88.   could take as long as 6 minutes depending
  89.   upon your computer.  DO NOT interrupt the
  90.   flash process once the modem display goes
  91.   blank.  If the utility is not allowed to
  92.   finish (for any reason), restart the
  93.   computer and run the flasher again.
  94.  
  95. - If the FLASH program reports "NO UART
  96.   OR MODEM FOUND" then most likely you
  97.   have either selected the wrong COM port
  98.   or there is a conflict between running
  99.   the FLASH utility and other software
  100.   in memory.  To be sure that no conflicts
  101.   occur, FORMAT a bootable floppy diskette
  102.   in drive A: and copy the FLASH utility
  103.   to this diskette.  Reboot the computer
  104.   from this diskette and run the FLASH
  105.   utility again.  (This is ALSO the best
  106.   method to use the FLASH program on a
  107.   PC that normally runs OS/2 or UNIX or
  108.   on a PC emulation card in a different
  109.   type of computer system.)
  110.  
  111. - When the flash process is complete, the
  112.   modem display will return to OK.  You now
  113.   should RESET to ensure full operation.
  114.  
  115. - ****IMPORTANT****  To reset the modem, open
  116.   a terminal program like COMit!, ProComm,
  117.   Telix, etc. and check the that the port
  118.   rate is set to 38400.  At the flashing
  119.   cursor, type the command:
  120.  
  121.   AT&F2&W&W1Z
  122.  
  123.   and then press the Return key.  The modem
  124.   should respond with OK on the computer
  125.   screen.  The modem is now fully upgraded
  126.   and operational.

  130. MACINTOSH users need the FLASHMODEM utility.

  137. - Be sure the modem is connected to the
  138.   computer and turned on.  Double-click on
  139.   the FLASHMODEM icon to start the flasher
  140.   utility program.  The flasher will test
  141.   the modem and show a list of currently
  142.   supported features and the current
  143.   firmware revision in the modem.  To
  144.   upgrade to the new flash code, click on
  145.   the FLASH button.
  146.  
  147. - When the flash process is in progress, the
  148.   modem display will go blank and the RD
  149.   light will flicker rapidly while the modem
  150.   downloads the new flash code.  The entire

  153.   upon your Macintosh.  DO NOT interrupt the

  165.   or White Knight and check the that the port

  172.   should respond with OK on the computer
  173.   screen.  The modem is now fully upgraded
  174.   and operational.

  178. TROUBLE-SHOOTING THE FLASHER UTILITIES:
  179. --------------------------------------
  180.         
  181.         If the flash process is interrupted,
  182.   the modem will be left in flash mode.  On
  183.   externals, this is characterized by a blank
  184.   display, the TR light is lit, and the SD
  185.   and/or RD light will flicker incessantly.
  186.   (On internals the modem will repeat a
  187.   stream of data at 9600bps.)
  188.  
  189.         When the modem is in flash mode,
  190.   the only way to "bring it back" is to
  191.   run the flasher again.
  192.  
  193.         Once in a while, a modem may not
  194.   respond to the flasher (i.e. the flash
  195.   process won't begin...the display may
  196.   flicker at regular intervals, but never
  197.   goes blank and the flasher just sits
  198.   there with no activity or an error
  199.   message.  In the event this happens,
  200.   contact Supra Tech Support in order to
  201.   resolve this problem.

  203.         If Your Modem Appears to be Dead,
  204.   it's probably stuck in flash mode (blank
  205.   display and rapid flashing of the RD
  206.   light). You can generally return the
  207.   modem to normal operation by running
  208.   the flasher utility again.
